My daughter made the comment that Miley Cyrus was a Christian and my son asked how she knew that fact. Her response was she sounded like one. He of course said you can’t tell by the way someone sounds. I disagree.
Too many of us (myself included) go to church and maybe even serve and wear the cross and t-shirt proclaiming Christ. I wonder how many of us LOOK like Christians but if an 8 year old girl just heard our words would she say we sound like one too.
Now we could argue that a lot of people sound Christian and I agree but let’s not be cynical and assume for a minute she meant sound like Jesus. Do our words allow other people to identify you as Christ followers or not? If I did not know your actions or your intentions and just recorded your words from morning until night, would anyone say that is a Christian? I am very sad to say mine would not.
My theory is not that saying the right words makes you a Christ follow. My argument is that to be a Christ follower you have to tell people about Christ. There are all kinds of rules and customs and commands but let’s be honest it really comes down to telling people about Christ.
So do your words show you are a Christian? YES! If you say four letter words are you not a Christian? Depends on whether those four letter words include GOOD and NEWS as far as I can tell.
