Why I don't serve

When I was called to serve at Bay Area Fellowship I was not wandering around in the dessert. I was busy with 5 kids and a job that required travel and long hours. I pretended to sacrifice my time by helping around the church when it was convenient. I rarely served when it was hard to do so or it was a sacrifice. God never let me completely ignore that calling to do more.

Some of my arguments were:

1. My family needs me.
2. My job just won't let me get away.
3. I'm tired and need a break on the weekends.
4. There will be plenty of people there to cover for me not serving.
5. I do more than most people so it's time for someone else to pick up the slack.

The truth is these excuses are valid but not from God. In order to believe these excuses are true you have to believe God is calling you to serve and does not know your family needs you and you need rest on the weekend. You have to believe He is unaware of the number of people that are serving or the contribution other people need to make in the His church.

Some of the reason I serve are:

1. My family needs me to serve because that is leadership.

2. My job won't let me get away so I take vacation, come in early or stay late on other days and honor my God and my boss.

3. I'm tired and need a break on the weekends and serving others fills my soul way more than fishing or football.

4. There will be plenty of people there to cover for me not serving so God will know I chose to be there instead of doing it for other reasons.

5. I do more than most people so it's time for someone else to pick up the slack and I need lead by example so others will get involved.

Awesome Blog my friend. Sometimes its hard to serve, but thats a better reason to follow God, because its a sacrifice. But not really, God has given us so much, were just giving him a little time to do what he asks. Thanks for that.
